About this route
This is a 5 day and 4-night driving route that starts from Osaka or Kyoto, you'll drive along the Sea of Japan, through the Chugoku mountains, and counterclockwise around the Seto Inland Sea. The driving distance is about 900km in total or about 200km per day. It is a 5-days itinerary, you can visit the sea, mountains, castles, shrines, temples, and 3 world heritages. It does not include a consecutive stay in the same city, and due to long driving distance and many sightseeing spots, the travel pace is very busy. If you prefer a more relaxing itinerary, we recommend that you spend two nights in Matsue (the 3rd night) or Hiroshima (the 4th night). If you are an onsen lover, you can stay a maximum of 3-nights at an inn with Tamatsukuri Onsen in Matsue where it is nationally famous for its beautiful skin onsen. The highlights of this route are "Tottori Sand Dune", "Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine", UNESCO world heritage "Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome&Peace Memorial Park", and "Itsukushima Shrine(Miyajima Island)". And on day 1, from Osaka to Tottori, you can enjoy driving along the "Uradome Coast" which has been registered as a UNESCO geopark for its beautiful sheer cliffs and islands. Recommended food on this route is snow crab in Tottori, sea bream rice in Matsue, and okonomiyaki & oyster in Hiroshima. You also can enjoy a variety of flowers in each season. In spring, you can enjoy panoramic views of cherry blossom, tulips, nemophila, moss pink, wisteria, and so on. In summer, the sunflower fields are really remarkable. And in autumn, you can enjoy amazing autumn-colored leaves at many sightseeing spots. Our daily driving map will recommend to you only the spots where it is the best timing to visit.

Day. 1Osaka/Kyoto to Tottori
This day you will head from Osaka or Kyoto to Tottori. The mileage is about 300km including the expressway. It is a very long journey and there are many attractions along the way too. It is recommended to depart as early as possible. If you cannot depart from Osaka or Kyoto in the morning, it is recommended to stay overnight at Osaka or Kyoto. The first destination is "Izushi Castle Town(出石城下町)". From Osaka or Kyoto, let's take the expressway here. Since it is a 150-200km long drive, take a break at a parking area along the way. There are about 50 Izushi soba noodle shops in the town and it is a great place for lunch. After that, let's head to "Genbudo Park(玄武洞公園)". There is a unique cave that formed from cooled-off magma that solidified. Five kilometers north of Genbudo is the famous "Kinosaki Onsen Town(城崎温泉)". Instead of Izushi Castle Town, it is also a good idea to have lunch here. After that, it is a 60 km drive along the sea to "Uradome Coast(浦富海岸)". This is a highlight of the day as it is recognized as a UNESCO Geopark and driving along the coast is very pleasant. However, the GPS will guide you to drive inland on Route 178 or the highway. To drive along the coast, we recommend stopping at "Takeno Beach(竹野海岸)", " Al Mare", or "cafe bloom". At Uradome Beach, you can take pictures of the beautiful contrast between the sea, the granite cliffs, and the pine trees. The famous "Tottori Sand Dunes(鳥取砂丘)" are about 10 km from Uradome Coast. If it is dark, you can visit the dunes the next day, but the sunset over the dunes is also beautiful, so if you can make it, head there."
