About this route
This is a 3 day 2 night driving route which covers almost all of Kagoshima prefecture. A feature of this route is that you can visit Osumi peninsula along with Ogawa falls and Cape Sata with a car ferry. The travel pace is relaxing due to the short driving distance (only 440km for 4 days) It is also recommended for travelers who like Onsen because you will stay 2 nights at an inn with an Onsen. The highlights of this route includeSenganen,Chiran Samurai house district, sand-bath in Ibusuki town, trecking at Ebino highland and walking around Ogawa falls. Recommended food on this route includes a Japanese set lunch in a samurai house in Chiran, umberjack fish at an unknown fisherman's restaurant in Sakurajima and Black Pork in Kirishima. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossom,rape blossoms, roses and wisteria. In summer you can enjoy sun flowers. In autumn, you can enjoy colored ginkgo trees. There are many sightseeing spots around Ibusuki town and Makurazaki city. If you prefer a more relaxing itinerary, Route4607 is recommended.

Day. 1Kagoshima to Ibusuki
This journey will take you from Kagoshima to Ibusuki. You can have a relaxing day because the travel distance is only about 90km. In the morning, let's drive to the Senganen Garden(仙巌園). Here there is the house of the Shimazu family who strongly contributed to the Japan modernization and from here you can enjoy an idyllic Sakurajima view from their beautiful garden. The main highlight of this day The main highlight of this day has to be the Chiran Samurai House District (知覧武家屋敷) which is listed as a preserved district, which has traditional buildings with a strong 270 years of history. You can enjoy walking through 7 Samurai houses with beautiful Japanese gardens. You also can have a delicious lunch and tea in this town. Our driving map will guide you directly to some Japanese restaurants within Samurai houses and famous English tea houses. After lunch, the Chiran Peace Museum(知覧特攻平和会館) is worth stopping by. This is a museum dedicated to the young men who were chosen to become Kamikaze (suicidal attack) pilots. If you still have time, it is recommended to drop off at Mt. Onodake Park(大野岳公園). From the observatory visitors can see a panoramic view of Mt. Kaimondake and the tea plantations spread out all around the area. Ibusuki is nationally famous for its sand bathes. It is recommended to reach your inn early so that you can enjoy it and an Onsen as well. If you don't stay at an inn with a sand bath facility, you also can go to a one-day sand bath. In addition, be sure that there are amazing cherry blossom and rape blossom places on this route in spring. Rent a car at Kagoshima
Return a car at Kagoshima If you choose "One way route", you need to return your rental car at Kagoshima city. Below 2 branches are recommended. ①Kagoshima Chuo Station East Exit Branch : For travelers who take Shinkansen(Bullet train) to Fukuoka. ②Kagoshima Airport Branch : For travelers who take international or domestic flight from Kagoshima airport.
Stay at Ibusuki
You will stay in Ibusuki(指宿) city on this day. Ibusuki is a town famous nationwide for hot sand baths. Some hotels and Ryokans have not only normal Onsen but own sand baths facility as well and highly recommended. Ibusuki is consider as countryside. Restaurants, shops and convenience stores are very limited and difficult to find place to have dinner and breakfast. Don't forget to book plan with dinner and breakfast. Most of accommodations don't charge parking fee.
Day. 2Ibusuki to Kirishima
On this day you will be heading from Ibusuki famous sand bath resorts to Kirishima The distance is about 150km and you also need to take a car ferry from Yamakawa port to Nejime port. There are many sightseeing spots along this road so it is then highly recommended to depart as early as possible in the morning. Please ask your hotel staff to book the ferry in advance. You can check details from the Yamakawa port page. Please book the ferry either departing at 8:00am or 10:00am at the latest. Once you reach Nejime port, the first recommendation is Panolama Park Nishiharadai(パノラマパーク西原台) located 10km away. You can enjoy a panoramic view of Sakurajima island and Mt. Kaimondake from altitude of 439m. The biggest highlight of this day is Ogawa Falls(雄川の滝) the unknown waterfall which can be accessed by a traveler who chooses this driving route only. It is required to walk on a 1.2km walking trail to reach the waterfall but it is highly recommended that if you are able to walk that distance you do. Cape Sata Observatory Park(佐多岬) located in the southernmost point of Kyushu is also recommended. However, it will take 90 minutes to return from Nejime port so please control your schedule. Today's recommended lunch is the secret fisherman's restaurants which are unknown by foreign tourists. Their ambejack fish is amazing. Please check the map. After that, let's stop by Tsubobatake(坂元のくろず壺畑情報館) where they have been producing black vinegar in a traditional way for more than 200 years. Then, you can head to the Kirishima (霧島) area where there are many other sightseeing spots like a farm, a highland, a park where Onsen steam blows out from the ground, and so on. At night, please take a rest at a traditional Onsen in Kirishima. In addition, there are many nice flower spots with roses, azaleas and cherry blossoms. Stay at Kirishima
You will stay in Kirishima(霧島) on this day. Kirishima is a very famous hot spring resort. You can choose from a reasonable 3-star ryokan to a 5-star ryokan which provide you a wonderful dinner and an amazing Onsen facilities. Kirishima area is consider as countryside. Restaurants, shops and convenience stores are very limited and difficult to find place to have dinner and breakfast. Don't forget to book plan with dinner and breakfast. Day. 3Kirishima to Kagoshima
Today the journey will take you from Kirishima to Kagoshima. You can have a relaxing day because the mileage is only about 100km. If you are an onsen lover it is good idea to enjoy it in the morning before your departure. The first destination is Kirishima Jingu Shrine(霧島神宮). In the morning, there are few tourists allowing you to feel the solemn atmosphere. Kirishima Open Air Museum(霧島アートの森) or trekking at Ebino Kogen Plateau(えびの高原) are also recommended but more time is required, so please control your schedule. You have many lunch options such as a. nice atmosphere cafe, Black Pork, ramen, revolving sushi and so on today. Let's find your favorite from our recommendation located in MyMap. After lunch you can stop by Ryumon Falls(龍門滝) and then head to Kagoshima city. If you haven't visit Sengan-en(仙巌園), it is highly recommended to reach there at least 1 hour before closing time. The final destination is Shiroyama Park Observation Deck(城山公園展望台). You will be amazed with Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, lluminated by the setting sun and night view of Kagoshima city.
