About this route
3 days 2 nights round trip driving route, which you can drive from northern end to southern end of the Sado Island. The driving distance is about 310km for 3days. You can drive along the coast with steep cliffs, scenic mountain roads, villages with a unique atmosphere, and so on. Travel pace is relaxing due to consecutive stay at same accommodation and daily driving distances are shorter than driving routes in Honshu mainland Japan. However, please be careful to control your itinerary for your ship schedule from/to Niigata port. There are accommodations around the center part of the island but we recommend staying around Ryotsu Port, where the ferry terminal is located, and in the Aikawa area near the Sado Gold Mine, where you can enjoy hot springs. The highlight of this route is Sado's most famous & important spot "Sado Gold Mine", gorgeous temples such as "Seisuiji Temple" and "Myosenji Temple", "Shukunegi", a village of shipbuilders and traders, and "Osado Skyline road", where you can enjoy a spectacular drive. In the northern part of the island, where we will drive on day 2, the mountains close in on the coast, and you can drive through a scenic area of cliffs and countless reefs that stretches for about 50 kilometers. You can enjoy the stunning natural scenery such as "Futatsugame" and "Senkaku Bay". The recommended meal is seafood. Sado is also famous for its oyster farming. Drive Japan will let you know cafes with a very nice atmosphere too. The best time for self-drive travel in Sado Island is from late April to early November because from mid-November to mid-April, the Osado Skyline road is closed for the winter season, and the ships in between Niigata and Sado island may be suspended due to rough seas. However, the seafood is the most delicious and fewer tourists, so if you want to enjoy travel at a reasonable price, winter is also a good time to visit.

Day. 1Sado(Ryotsu) to Sado(Ryotsu)
This day will head to Southend of the Sado Island. Mileage is about 100km. This itinerary is required about 5-7 hours depends on the number of spots you will visit. Please control your schedule. The first destination is "Sado Nishimikawa Goldpark(佐渡西三川ゴールドパーク)". Sado island itself is famous for its gold and you can try the gold panning experience. After 15km of driving, you can visit "Yajima and Kyojima(矢島経島)". This is a beautiful cove that provides a "Taraibune boat experience". It is also nice to walk around the cove too. The best highlight is "Shukunegi village(宿根木)" where is a small but unique fisherman's village. Because all the houses here were built by ship's carpenter, the village has a very unique atmosphere. You can see inside of some houses too. On the way back to your accommodation, there is a very nice atmosphere cafe. Relax and enjoy nice bread with panoramic scenery.
