Amami Oshima island

About Amami oshima island

The Amami Islands are a truly ‘off the beaten tourist track’ destination. Amami Oshima is the largest island in the Satsunan island chain that runs between Kyushu and Okinawa. Amami Oshima's beautiful beaches are dotted along its coastline with white sand and clear, warm waters ideal for swimming during the summer months. The islands have numerous endangered species and Amami Oshima has the second largest mangrove forest in Japan. Amami Oshima has a rich human history and unique cuisine. The island is additionally known for its revered Oshima Tsumugi silk that has been used for centuries to make high-quality kimono. The local culture, food, and art of Amami are quite distinctive, making Amami unique within Japan. There are 2 routes offered by Drive Japan, a Day trip and a 2 day 1 night trip. All the drive routes are round trips from Amami Airport. Most foreign tourists don't know this area and fewer travelers because it is not as famous as Okinawa. Amami Oshima island is big, but has no train and has a poor bus system. Self-drive travel is by far the best way to travel the Amami Islands. The best time to visit is from late April to early November. ◆Kagoshima Drive routes https://drivejapan.co.jp/media/route/special_route_pages/kagoshima-peripheral/routes
