Gunkanjima Island

Gunkanjima is a relatively small assuredly unique Island located 20km away from Nagasaki. Now abandoned since 1974, its post-apocalyptic feature seems to be compound straight out from a movie. Naturally, it inspired many movie directors over the years. You might have seen it in the James Bond movie Skyfall. Thanks to its popularity, the Gunkanjima island is known as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Starting in the late 1800s, the island used to be exploited for the coal by 5000 workers who were living on the island. Regarding the size of the island, it used to be the area in the world with the highest density rate. There even used to be schools, shops, restaurants and a hospital. Since the closure and abandon of the site, multiple typhoons shaped the island as we know it today, with a very special haunted atmosphere. With the buildings almost collapsing, the site was forbidden for visitors until 2009 and the creation of a dock where you can walk through 3 observations decks, only on the southern part of the island, respecting a security distance from the buildings. On a clear day you might see the city of Nagasaki and mainly its harbor. If you decide to go there, it will probably be one of your most unforgettable experiences in Nagasaki.
