Kitsuki Castle Town

Located in Oita prefecture, Kitsuki is a historic castle town where visitors are immersed in a cultural atmosphere remaining from the Edo period. This castle village presents a very interesting topography with two samurai districts on hills on both the southern and northern area, and a commercial district in the middle. Knowing this, the town is often referred as the sandwich city.

The Kitsuki village is delimited on the Eastern side by a small but traditional castle, facing the Seto Inland sea, which is also a museum where you can observe artifacts and documents but also samurai helmets and even try one. Over the years, the city remarkably succeeded to preserve the authentic atmosphere along with the strong heritage. Visitors have the privilege to enter in various samurai residences in a friendly ambience. Indeed, if you want to experience as close as possible the lifestyle that used to be present in this city, you can rent traditional Kimonos and be dressed by professionals. It can be a memorable moment to spend with families and friends, and if you decide to do it then some samurai houses and attractions become free for entrance. The city offers many admirable spots on its hills, but the most iconic one is called Suya no Saka and was often filmed in drama movies. Regarding the houses to visit, we highly recommend you going to the Ohara residence which used to be the house of an elite samurai. You can find bellow, in the images content, a detailed map of Kitsuki castle town that highlights the most important spots to visit or at the least the ones that deserve the most attention.
