MAPCODE 42 099 585*50

Senganen Garden, also known as Isoteien(磯庭園), is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast of downtown Kagoshima. The garden was constructed by the wealthy Shimazu clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period, a tradition which still continues today. The most recommended spot in Kagoshima City, this garden is a must-see spot. The old house and garden of the General is so beautiful and well-kept, it is noted as a UNESCO world heritage site.

One of the garden’s most striking features is its use of sakurajima and Kagoshima bay as borrowed scenery. The garden also includes small ponds, streams, shrines, and a bamboo grove. At the center of the garden stands the Iso Residence, and is the main attraction apart from the nature here. As travel experts at Drive Japan, we highly recommend this spot.

Advice:
Must see spot! Be sure to stop by. To see the inside of the Iso Residence, go inside the tourist information center to book a tour for 300 yen. Access by rental car into the ruined remains of the charcoal klin and sluice gate are recommended.
