Fukiya Old Village吹屋の町並み
Fukiya was the first town in Japan to succeed in producing Bengala (Red Iron Oxide which is one of the red pigments and abrasives) in the Edo period (1603-1868), and it prospered as the only production center in Japan. The town developed and prospered around a copper mine and also produced bengara color pigment from red iron oxide. Some of the houses remain private dwellings, while others have been converted into restaurants and shops. Walking through the street is almost like going back in time as many of the houses have been beautifully preserved. There are many wonderful places tucked away in the streets, from an art gallery to a tea shop.
