Mojiko Port Retro Area & Observatory門司港レトロ
The Mojiko Port has been an international trading port since the late 19th century and is now an interesting and historical touristic spot as several splendid Western-type buildings have been preserved from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Thanks to its strong heritage and the variety of visits proposed, the Mojiko Port Retro Area is one of the most interesting spots in Kitakyushu city.
The most iconic building is certainly the Western-style Mojiko wooden station, as it was completed in 1914 and is the oldest station on the Kagoshima line. You can then easily join a red-bricked and eye-catching building which is the former Moji Customs Building and is now an appealing art gallery. Along the water, you can enter the Kanmon Kaikyo Museum commemorating the history of the strait. You can then enjoy a calm and romantic walk by the sea the reach the Kaikyo Plaza, an impressive shopping facility center offering a myriad of local products and souvenirs. While you walk around this area you will without a doubt notice the tallest and modern building, that shelters the Mojiko Retro Observation Room, 103 meters above the ground. You can also visit the "Old Mitsui Club-旧三井倶楽部" which was built in 1921 as a guest house for important visitors. Albert Einstein and his wife stayed here in 1922. If you have 2 days and 1 night, we invite you to explore the suburbs of Fukuoka. You have three main destinations suggested like Kitakyushu/Shionoseki, Takeo/Ureshino and very famous Onsen towns such as Yufuin/Beppu which are worth checking out. It is recommended for travelers who do not dispose of much time but who would not only want to visit Fukuoka City but also other places. However, 2 Days and 1 Night is very limited and we highly recommend to at least choose route with 3 days and 2 nights, or longer if you can. Additionally, it is risky to take a flight or bullet train after returning your car as external environment concerns can happen and can't be predicted. This is why we would advise to stay one night at Fukuoka.
