Unzen Nita Ropeway
The Unzen Nita Ropeway enables visitors to take a walk at 1300meters above the sea level. The ropeway connects Nita pass station to Mount Myokendake, separated by 500meters, in about 3 minutes. Once you are in the cabin, you can observe a breathtaking view through large windows covering all the sides, from the top to your feet.
The operation is manual and represents the symbol of the Unzen Nita Ropeway high technical skill and tradition. From the top of Mount Myokendake, you can expect, depending on the weather, to have a splendid view on several other mountains and islands from Kyushu, as well as the mount “Heisei Shinzan(平成新山)” formed after the eruption of the volcano in 1990. The spectacle is always impressive but differs in terms of color regarding the time of the year you visit the spot. During winter, Hana Bouro is a natural where all the surrounding trees are frozen on the trunk and branches. When it is sunny the trees look like glittering diamonds. In spring, some hundreds of thousands of ""Rhododendron Kiusianum"", known as Unzen azalea, color the mountain in unique shades of purple. In summer, the mountain has traditional green from the trees but offers a cool and average temperature of 20 degrees. However, the most famous period is in autumn where the leaves turns red, orange and yellow, known as the “Fugendake Red Forest” it is a part of the National Natural Treasure. If you are lucky with the weather this spot can reach 5 stars, but it has to be with at least a clear day.
Advice:
-In winter, the Hana Bouro effect starts around mid-November or early December each year.
-In spring, the Unzen azalea starts to bloom from early May, but the best views are often offered in late May, where the weather is the clearest.
-In autumn there are over 120 different leaf plan species, so you can go there from September to November.
-If the weather if foggy or not clear, you might even need to go there.
- The entrance is located along the “Unzen Nita Jyunkan Road(雲仙仁田循環道路)” where each car has to pay 100 yen to access.
