
Naena Falls苗名滝
Naena Falls is located on the border of Niigata and Nagano and is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature. It is famed for its crashing sound and power which is why it earned the name of ‘earthquake waterfall’, with a massive drop of 55m. There are several observation points near the waterfall to feel its power. The trail leading to the waterfall is 400 m long and easy to climb as it maintained well. From the parking lot to the waterfall it takes approximately 15 mins one way. At the end of the trail is a long bridge where visitors can see the entire waterfall.
It's a popular spot for visitors to escape the summer heat and is also one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls.
There is a restaurant near the parking lot at the beginning of the hike which serves a popular dish called nagashi-somen (local, authentic noodles).
Advice :
Located 100 km from Yuzawa city, about 2 hours by car.
It depends on the season, but the current of the river around the waterfall is expremely rapid and dangerous. Do not get into the water around the waterfall. There is a place where you can play in the river with a gentle flow near the parking lot.
The footholds near the waterfalls are slippery and dangerous, it is strongly advised to return to the parking area before sunset.
Best seasons to visit:
Spring -( around May )the water level increases due to the thawed water crashing, making the fall more powerful.
Summer - For the refreshing feeling and to escape the heat.
Autumn - (Mid Oct to late Oct ) to see the bright contrasting autumn leaves.
Free parking available called Naenadaki parking lot.
